OUR STORY

Fauna Smart Technologies was born in 2019 in Copenhagen, Denmark — one of the leading hubs for life sciences and biotechnology in the Nordics and Europe. But even before Fauna’s official birth, she existed in the mind of our founder, as a seed, waiting for the right moment to address society’s call for radical environmental change. This call came with transformative initiatives like the EU Green Deal, Farm2Fork, and the Biodiversity Strategy 2030, all this catalyzed by the societal shifts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Guided by a strong vision at our core, we set out to bridge science, technology, and environmental stewardship. Our mission is to empower decision-makers, promote biodiversity, and build resilient ecosystems by turning research and innovation into tangible solutions for the planet’s most pressing challenges.

Our Core Principles

By prioritizing the Environment, we are Prioritizing Humanity

The Biosphere is our planet’s life-support system, and it must come first, as it is the source of essential environmental services. Guided by the Stockholm Resilience Centre’s “wedding cake” model (2016), we understand that complex system innovation is required to rebuild and restore the Biosphere. Our multidisciplinary science and technology approach is rooted in integrated bio-systems thinking and driven by a clear strategic vision to align with nature, ensuring impact with depth and scale.

Strategic Vision

Our Founder and CEO has developed a methodological approach to achieve impact with both depth and scale, addressing all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by starting where it matters most – the Biosphere.

Ten years ago, Dragana was part of pioneering sustainability initiatives between the Sustainability Science Center (University of Copenhagen) and the Stockholm Resilience Centre, during the early stages of the SDGs. These experiences deeply influenced her career path, leading her to develop a methodological framework for product creation rooted in life sciences. This methodology became the foundation of Fauna Smart Technologies. Today, we continue to build on that vision, ensuring that the technologies we develop serve the principles uncovered through rigorous experimentation in the lab, semi-field, and field.

How is the new Why

Building products for the environment starts with lifesciences/biotech and Blue Ocean strategy. The entire philosophy regarding product development is built around these fields, combined with existing technologies and/or a slight modification of it, with strong ICT systems. Blue Ocean strategy is here to help us angle the product to achieve impact with depth and scale, for many, and for diverse stakeholders.

This methodological approach emerged from the obvious need to accelerate lifesciences knowledge in-field to improve decision making for diverse stakeholders. And in order to do so, we need to be building (near)-real-time tools to “take labs outside”.

To create a sustainable future, we must think beyond sustainability and embrace regeneration, as planetary ecosystems have already been severely damaged. The Stockholm Resilience Centre’s Planetary Boundaries framework (2009) warned us that the biosphere is in critical decline. Unfortunately, the EU Sustainable Development Report (2019) confirmed that no significant improvement has occurred since then. The collapse of the biosphere will lead to the collapse of humanity – making its restoration our top priority!

At Fauna Smart Technologies, we are leading ecosystem transformation by designing products aligned with nature to heal ecosystems, rebuild biodiversity, and enable intelligent plant communication. Restoring these complex natural processes requires life scientists and engineers to think beyond traditional frameworks, and this multidisciplinary approach defines who we are.

Technologies we create need to serve lifescience laws we diligently discover in lab, semi-field and field when experimenting.
